Kinesiology Programs - Internships
Overview
The Kinesiology Internship program is designed to give students valuable on-the-job skills training and the opportunity to apply scientific knowledge to professional practice, all while earning academic credit. Students complete a minimum of 120 hours at an internship site of their choice. The internship site can be in a variety of professions (physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, dentistry, optometry, among others) relevant to the Kinesiology degree program.
Program Objectives
- Enhance undergraduate academic experience through hands-on application of techniques learned in the classroom (learning by doing)
- Develop leadership and interpersonal skills in a professional setting
- Gain relevant experience with projects and procedures in a supervised and structured setting
- Reflection of growth throughout the internship process
Program Requirements
- Enrollment in KIN 484
- KIN 494 Pre-Internship is highly recommended and is required starting catalog year 2011-2012
- Completion of 3 of the 4 core Kinesiology courses (KIN 335, KIN 340, KIN 345, KIN 352)
- Completion of 120 hours at internship site
- Submission of all required coursework
Internship Process
- Contact the Internship Coordinator by e-mail. Do not forget to include which semester you are interested in completing your internship. The Internship Coordinator will then send you the documents you must submit to gain enrollment in the course.
- Once approved for enrollment, you must seek out a site to complete your internship. You may choose from a list of approved sites, or submit a new site for program approval.
- Once you have selected and confirmed with a site, you must meet with your site supervisor to discuss the course requirements, the specific internship site requirements, and get information for pre-semester course submissions. Typically, the Pre-Semester Submission documents must be turned in six weeks before the start of the semester.
- There are several submission deadlines throughout the KIN 484 course. The specific dates will be listed on the course syllabus available on the course Blackboard site. Prompt submission of all required work is essential for success in the course.
- At the end of the semester, a grade (Pass or Fail) will be given based on the complete of the established criteria.
