Director's Message - December 5, 2011

As we look forward to the start of Spring semester and a New Year, I would like to congratulate the first class of graduates from the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion! These scholars represent the future of health promotion in Arizona and across the nation and we congratulate them on their successes.

As they, and you, look forward, I encourage each of you to reach out for new opportunities and experiences. No matter what specific area of health promotion you are engaged in, the need is great. Community agencies such as local food banks, the Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, local schools, congregate meal sites for older adults, and health clinics offer a range of volunteer opportunities that will allow you to hone your skills, develop new areas of expertise, build confidence in your knowledge, and confirm or modify your career choice. In many cases, you can work with your faculty to secure academic credit; in other cases, your efforts will form a foundation of service and volunteerism that will continue to grow for many years to come.

Since his arrival, ASU President Dr. Michael Crow has been a strong supporter of “community embeddedness” and “use inspired research” – two concepts that are extremely well suited to the abilities and interests of our faculty, staff, and student populations.

The School continues to expand in student enrollment, course and degree offerings, featured lectures and workshops, and new partnerships. I invite you to contact me with any suggestions you may have. Have a wonderful break and don’t forget – Spring semester starts early - January 5, 2012!

Fond Regards,

Linda Vaughan
