Evolution
The school was formed in June 2011, uniting health promotion disciplines with the common goal of improving health and well-being through lifestyle modification. The Nutrition program has its origins in “Domestic Science,” first offered at ASU in 1909. The Exercise and Wellness, and Kinesiology programs evolved from a generic “Physical Education” program begun in the mid-1900s. Health Sciences and Medical Laboratory Science programs are in their infancy, having been approved by the Arizona Board of Regents in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Programs have physically and administratively transitioned over the past three years: the Exercise and Wellness, and Nutrition programs have moved from the Polytechnic campus of ASU to the Downtown campus, while the Kinesiology program is gradually moving from the Tempe campus to Downtown over the next three years.
Academic Programs
The School of Nutrition and Health Promotion offers a range of baccalaureate degrees (BS, BAS), masters degrees ( thesis and non-thesis options), and a unique Interdisciplinary PhD in Physical Activity, Nutrition and Wellness. The BS in Nutrition, Dietetics concentration, is nationally accredited by the Commission of Accreditation of Dietetic Education.
